First DeuceDay of the Spring Semester Gets Cracking!
Star students from the Think Together Tutoring Center at the Hunter Oaks Apartment Complex in West Jackson were rewarded with a fun afternoon of cooking at The Everyday Gourmet (1725 E. County Line Road) on Tuesday, January 23. Star students at the tutoring center are those students who maintained good attendance in the after-school program, showed an improvement in grades, and kept good behavior for the fall semester.
Eleven elementary students, ranging from first to sixth grade learned basic cooking skills under the expert instruction of Leslie Carpenter from The Everyday Gourmet. The first task for the afternoon was learning how to prepare a work space, including washing hands before beginning to cook. Then the students learned the proper technique for cracking eggs. After perfecting egg cracking techniques, the youngsters began making individual chili-cheese cups. When the chili-cheese cups went in the oven, the cookie making began, and the students created yummy oatmeal raisin lollipop cookies.
While the goodies were in the oven, Carpenter quizzed the students on common kitchen items and taught them that cleaning up and sharing space in the kitchen is essential for a positive cooking experience. As you can see from the photos, after clean up was complete the kids enjoyed the great food they learned to make!
